After Seed Watering and Mowing Guide

Watering Tips:

- Water, water, water! Keep the new lawn moist at all times. Try to water at least three times a day for 10 minutes; morning, mid-day, and late afternoon. Do not over water (avoid puddling).

Note: This step is crucial to a successful lawn. Once the seed gets wet it must stay wet. If the grass seed dries out it will crack and die, that seed won’t germinate.

- Try avoiding using the lawn for the next 2-3 weeks for the best results. You can go on the lawn but avoid using it for extended periods of time. Children, dogs, etc. may cause harm to the new seed.

- Depending on soil temperatures after 10-14 days may begin to see seed germination, this means you are doing things right. Continue keeping the new lawn area moist this is extremely important now that the lawn is beginning to develop.

Note: We use a mixed blend of grass seed for good coverage in different conditions. Each species of grass germinates at a different rate, some grasses take up to 21 days to germinate. As your new grass is germinating it will look thin and slowly fill in as each type of grass develops.

Mowing Tips:

- When to Mow: After 2 1⁄2- 3 weeks or when the grass reaches a height of 4-5 inches cut the lawn for the first time at a height of 3 inches.

- After the third cutting you may also cut back on watering. A healthy lawn requires about 1 inch of water per week. Deep, infrequent watering in the early morning will help develop a deep root system.

- After you have cut the lawn three times you may apply fertilizers and other pesticides that kill weeds, bugs and other pests. Velvet Green does not use anything that will interfere with new grass seed germination.

Tips for the future of your lawn:

• Continue with a good fertilizer regimen and be sure to lime your lawn at least once a year

• If your lawn begins to look unhealthy have a soil test performed

• Cut your lawn at 3-3 1⁄2 inches tall

• Sharpen your mower blade at the beginning of each season

• Don’t cut off more than 1/3 of the grass blade. Mow at least once a week until growth slows down.
